Do you need Swedish to succeed in Sweden?
Not for your studies, but yes for daily life. University programmes in Sweden are almost always in English, and 96 % of Swedes speak English. Still, basic Swedish will make everyday situations, work and integration much easier.
At bachelor and master level you will find thousands of English-taught programmes. Universities do not require Swedish, and admissions via universityadmissions.se are handled entirely in English. Lectures, exams and seminars are in English.
In shops, offices, the post office and at the doctor you can get by in English. However, if you want a full bank account, BankID and Swish, to integrate into the community and read local information, Swedish is a big advantage. Basics help you understand the culture and feel at home.
As an EU student you can work unlimited hours. Finding a student job without Swedish is hard but not impossible. With English you are most likely to find work in hospitality, delivery, university libraries or au-pair. In IT, engineering or design, paid internships are realistic even without Swedish. Once you have basic Swedish your options expand quickly.
The best approach is a combination: SFI (free Swedish for immigrants, run by the municipality), university beginner Swedish courses, apps like Duolingo, Babbel and Memrise, and watching shows with Swedish subtitles. Start before you leave and continue immediately after arrival — the language is learned by using it.
6–12 months before departure: start apps and basic phrases. First week in Sweden: sign up for SFI. First semester: attend a course, speak with locals, consume Swedish content. By the end of the first year: everyday conversations and writing simple messages should be realistic.
